Trang An boat tour — what to expect, tickets and timing

About
Trang An is the core of the Trang An Landscape Complex, listed by UNESCO in 2014 as a mixed World Heritage site — one of very few in the world recognised for both its culture and its natural landscape. You see it from a small rowing boat: a boatwoman takes four or five passengers through a chain of flooded caves, past ancient temples built into the rock, and across still valleys ringed by limestone karst. There is no engine and no commentary, only the sound of the oar.
This is the single most visited place in Ninh Binh, and with reason. If you have one day in the province, this is the half-day to give up for it.
Where it is
The boat wharf is at Trang An, Tay Hoa Lu ward, Ninh Binh province — the old address was Truong Yen / Ninh Xuan commune, Hoa Lu city, which is still what many maps and older articles show. Coming from Ninh Binh city it is a straight run along Trang An Boulevard.
What to expect
Three boat routes leave from the same wharf, and each takes between two and four hours. They differ in which caves and temples they pass, not in quality: route one is the classic circuit through the oldest temples, route two and route three swing wider through the valleys and take in the film-set area used for a Hollywood production. You choose your route when you buy the ticket, and you cannot change it once you are on the water.
Things worth knowing before you sit down in the boat: the caves are low, and in a few of them everyone has to duck; life jackets are provided and should be worn; and the whole trip is on open water, so there is nowhere to shelter from sun or rain. Bring a hat, water and something waterproof for a camera. Tipping the boatwoman at the end is customary but not obligatory.

When to go
The complex is beautiful all year. The most comfortable months are the dry, cooler ones from late autumn through early spring; summer afternoons are hot and exposed on the water. Mornings are calmer and cooler than afternoons whatever the season, and the first boats of the day are the quietest.
Worth knowing
Two practical warnings. First, the fare below covers one boat route and insurance, so you do not pay the boat separately. Second, plenty of travel blogs still quote the old fare — check the date on anything you read, including this page.

How long does the Trang An boat trip take?
Each of the three routes takes between two and four hours on the water. Allow half a day including parking, buying tickets and waiting for a boat.
Which Trang An route should we choose?
They are all good and all leave from the same wharf. Route one takes in the oldest temples; the other two swing wider through the valleys. Pick when you buy your ticket — you cannot change route once you are aboard.
Is the boat trip suitable for children and older travellers?
Yes, with care. The boats are stable and life jackets are provided, but you sit low, several caves have very low ceilings, and there is no shade. Small children and anyone unsteady on their feet need a hand getting in and out.
