Mua Cave is the climb that ends up on everyone's photographs of Ninh Binh. Four hundred and eighty-six stone steps run up the flank of Mua mountain to two summits — a dragon sculpture on one ridge, a small temple on the other — and from the top you look straight down on the Ngo Dong river winding through the rice fields of Tam Coc.
It is short but genuinely steep, and it is the single most popular spot in the province with international visitors.
Where it is
Mua Cave is in Khe Dau Ha hamlet, at the foot of Mua mountain, in what was Ninh Xuan commune. It is very close to Tam Coc — close enough that the two are usually done on the same day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.
What to expect
The climb itself takes twenty to forty minutes at a steady pace. The steps are stone, uneven in places, and have handrails for most of the way; they are exposed to the sun the whole distance. Proper shoes make a real difference, and so does water.
The two summits are reached by different flights of steps from a fork partway up — most people do both, since you are already there. At the base there is a lotus pond that flowers in June and July, and gardens that are pleasant to walk even if you decide not to climb.
Go early or late. The middle of the day is hot on bare stone, and the top is narrow, so a queue forms at the summit for photographs when it is busy.

When to go
June and July for the lotus pond at the base, late May to early June for gold rice fields below. Sunrise and late afternoon are the best light and the coolest climb at any time of year.
Worth knowing
Note the ticket price carefully: it went up on 1 April 2026, and a large number of blog posts still quote the old figure. The price below is the current one, taken from the management board's own table and confirmed by national press coverage of the change.
